Diabetes Learning Resources

Online - Diabetes Specific and other general health related:

Learning what resources are helpful is a good place to begin the learning process.  This is not an all-inclusive list of websites but here are few of my favorites:

Use either the book or this website to count your carbohydrate/calories and other nutritional info such as fat calories; it will also give you ideas of how much exercise you would need to burn off certain amounts of calories from the food you choose.

The following links will take you to the multiple educational handouts that are helpful especially for those persons with diabetes:

  • Diabetes Care and Education (a dietetic practice group of the American Dietetic Association):  www.dce.org

This is another great general, overall information resource, regarding nutrition and diabetes specific information.  If you click either the link for “Health Education”, and link to “Easy to Read Publications” or “Healthy Moments” (streaming radio broadcast; you can download previous broadcasts as MP3s, to listen to during your workouts or whenever) or “Health Interactive Education Tools” – all are great resources.

From the home page, you can click on the Ask the Dietitian link (right hand side of the page).  This is an exceptional source of both nutritional information, as well as a other various topics, centering around optimal self-management of diabetes!)

This can be helpful website with general nutritional information; it is also helpful to understand why having a Registered Dietitian (RD) on your healthcare team can be a crucial component of your care.
